If you’re running a business, chances are you’ll need to hire a product photographer at some point. After all, high-quality product photos are essential for making a good impression on potential customers. But with so many photographers out there, how do you know which one is right for your business? Here are 3 things to consider when hiring a product photographer.
First, when choosing a photographer, consider if you like their style of photography that they show of other products? If not, they may not be a good fit for you. Check their website and social media for examples, but also reach out to them. Pay close attention to the way they edit, as well as the way they compose the products in the images. A good product photographer will have correct lighting and backgrounds to make the products shine in the photos.
You can also contact each of the photographers you’re considering to talk through their process. Do they have a questionnaire on the front end to collect info about how you’ll be using the photos? Do they give you examples of ways you could use the photos once you’ve receive the final gallery? These are important details to find out before selecting your photographer.
You’ll want to think through where you’ll be using the photos and which type of photos you need.
Do you want more lifestyle based images where the product is being used in real life (ex: a candle burning in a living room)? Or do you need modeled photos, where a model may be wearing or holding a product that you sell? You might need flat lay images, where your products are strategically arranged to show off their features. Make sure the photographer provides the types of photos you’re hoping to receive.
You want someone who will take your products and create photos that will show them at their best. Find someone whose communication style works well with yours and who really takes the time to understand your vision for the project.
You’ll want to be sure to ask about turnaround times for the final gallery as well as the process for getting the products to and from the photographer. Bonus tip — you don’t actually have to live in the same area as your product photographer. For example, in my business, clients ship their products to me to be photographed. Keep this in mind as you select your possible candidates!
By taking these factors into account, you’ll be sure to find the right product photographer for your business!
