Parents: Applying for college can be A LOT. There are many scholarship opportunities for seniors in Eugene if you know where to look. If you’re lucky enough to have an amazing school counselor to guide you and your student through the process, you may know all of what I’m about to tell you. If not, I have compiled some helpful tips on how to find scholarship opportunities for Oregon schools. The University of Oregon has a lot of opportunities for students staying in the area.
The first thing students need to do is to apply for admission to any colleges they want to pursue. The next step is to apply for the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). FAFSA gives students opportunities for grants, work-study, and loans. FAFSA awards will not be given until students are admitted to a school. TIP: File your FAFSA as soon as possible.
Next, apply for Oregon Student Aid. There are many scholarship opportunities for students here.
Once your student has been accepted to their college, there are financial aid opportunities to apply for directly. For example, the University of Oregon lists its school financial aid information here (general information) and here (scholarship information here). Sometimes there are also specific scholarships available in departments (for example: if your student wants to study education, the College of Education at the University of Oregon may have scholarships open to students once enrolled).
Selco Community Credit Union (application period open Feb. 1-March 31, 2024): awarding 20 scholarships of $3500 and a $7,500 Richard Metzler Opportunity
Oregon Community Credit Union Scholarship (deadline: March 1, 2024)
Elks Club (do not need to be a member)
Other places to check are your local bank or credit union (if not one listed above), your employer, organizations or clubs where you belong or have family who belongs, or potentially an employer where your student works.
